The Problem with The Math of Holdem

By on Aug 11, 2011 in Featured, Poker, Team Moshman | 0 comments

I really do like Collin and Doug’s book The Math of Holdem.   I still haven’t finished it, but  that’s mostly cause I’m trying to read like 17 books at once and keep getting distracted.   But I do think it overlooked a very important, albeit recent, contribution to the world of mathematics and how it affects the poker world.   How can we poker players reasonably be expected to delve into the mysteries of the poker world without a thorough understanding of this equation?     I expect to see an addendum in the second printing.   *********   Feel free to bounce over to teammoshman.com to leave comments on the cross...

Why does the pig have to be you?

I do need to get off my butt and write up part 3 (or more) of my Vegas Vacation recap, but I’ve been swamped and haven’t had a chance.  I did feel the need to write something so I’m taking the opportunity to showcase a couple of incredibly nerdy things that I like and think you should too.   The first is obviously The Micros.  If you haven’t watched the series then stop right now, Taylor Caby would not approve.  Go fire up Youtube and remedy that immediately, if not sooner.  I’ll be the first to admit that it’s probably not for everyone.  If you’re not knee deep in the online poker world then many of the jokes are going to fly right over your head.  My favorite moment though was in Episode 5.  I’ve chatted with John Wray, one of the co-creators of the series, on twitter and we both expressed a deep affection for the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer.  So when Pierre the Flamingo Hat...

Vegas Vacation – Part 2

Golfing with Team Moshman   When we last left our intrepid hero, he was getting ready for an o’dark thirty tee time with a few Team Moshman people.   Wednesday was the long day.  Started at 5:30am so we could make it to Angel Park Golf course with enough time to hit a few balls on the range and be ready for our 6:50am tee time.  Now in the weeks leading up to the trip I spent hours on Skype with HotJenny314 talking about golf and how excited she was.  I later found out why.  She had NEVER played a full round before.   This was going to be fun.   Knocking the ball around at Angel Park   So the two of us, along with Simon and Louis headed over and teed off just before 7am.  As we were leaving the first tee, the group behind us had a player smoking a cigar.  Being the huge fan of smokey treats that I am, I ask what he was partaking.  Turns out it was a cigar from a local shop (the Las...

I have to vent

Part 2 of the Vegas Vacation recap is in the works but I have to vent so it’s taking a back burner for a day or two.   First, I was supposed to be at a baseball game tonight.  That didn’t happen when a storm decided to roll through and they cancelled the game 3 hours before first pitch.  It’s freaking June for crying outloud.  This is March weather.  I had finally gotten the top off my jeep on Saturday and had to put it back on almost 48 hours later.  Combine this sudden summer showers with the fact that we’re supposed to have triple digit weather this weekend and suddenly all the nutjob envioronmental wackos are starting to sound incredibly sane.   But surprisingly enough, that’s not what set me off.  With the game cancelled, I rolled over to my folks place for some beer can chicken and to steal their internet, since mine has been wonky and AT&T is being dumb.  After we ate my...

Vegas Vacation – Part 1

I don’t know if there are words in the English language that will help me fully articulate just how much fun this week here in Vegas has been, but I shall try anyway.   After arriving on Sunday and spending way too much time in lines to get my rental car, I was finally able to make the trek to where I was staying. Since it wasn’t too far from the Collin and Katie‘s we ended up going to lunch and then Katie and I went shopping. Now, normally shopping is not something I’m a fan of (if it can’t be bought off Amazon I usually can’t be bothered) but this was shopping with a purpose. Katie had recently decided that she wanted to learn to golf and this trip was all about getting the “little” things that you don’t realize that you need: shoes, balls, tees, glove, etc. We managed to find a pair of shoes that Katie was happy with, fit well and were pink...

Good Luck Katie and I’m Headed to Vegas

cross posted at teammoshman.com   ******   My friend Katie is playing in the WSOP No Limit Shootout today.   For those not familiar with it, the shootout consists of dividing everyone into tables of 9 or 10 (not sure which) playing down till there is one winner.  Then those winners combine into tables and play down to one winner.  It’s kinda like The Highlander in that they keep repeating the process till there is only one.   It started at 12pm pacific time.   I sent her a text message at 12:23pm, “Have you won yet?”   29 minutes later she replied back, “haha I have a leggy image”   I’m assuming it’s cause she showed up Cake Style, but I have no idea what that had to do with the bluff she “had to show down” on the 2nd hand.   Anyway, good luck Katie.   *****   I finally got everything set up over at Merge to start playing again and...

It’s a bigger issue than we may want to admit.

So the month of April was a bit of a rollercoaster for me.  I started the month with a quick trip to Oakland to see part of the A’s opening series vs Seattle.  Then a few days later I was off to spend a week in Chicago.  A lot of people have that one “dream” city that they would love to visit.  For most it’s some place like New York or Paris.  For me it was Chicago.  Three years ago I got to spend about a day and a half there and go to two Cubs games.  It wasn’t enough time.  So, when my friend and I saw that the A’s were going to Chicago for a series with the Sox, we booked our flights and hotel and hit the road.   It started off a little rough.  Not so much for me, I got there on time and with little hassle.  But my friend Geoff had to take a different flight and got stuck on the tarmac for three and a half hours.  This wouldn’t have been an issue except for the fact that we had...
